How our LGV training process works
Step 1
You will need to apply for the correct provisional entitlements to be added to your current licence; therefore, you will need to fill out a D2 form, which can be filled out by you, and a D4 form, which must be completed either by your GP or a medical centre. Our friendly teams are always pleased to offer advice and help, and we hold both D2 and D4 forms at our offices, so why not call in and collect them?
Step 2
Once the forms are completed, post both of them along with your current driving licence to the DVLA. Your licence should then be returned within approximately 1–3 weeks with the provisional entitlements added.
Step 3
When you receive your licence back, you can then book your multiple-choice theory test and hazard perception by calling Monday to Friday, between 8 am and 4 pm or any time online www.gov.uk/book-theory-test
Step 4
Contact Hamilton's to arrange a time to come in and meet the team. Once you've decided you would like to use Hamilton's, we will book your 1-hour assessment. Our friendly team will ensure your training and test requirements are tailored to your individual needs.

Driver Qualification Card (DQC)

Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is taken in 2 parts

(Module 2) Case Study Theory Test

(Module 4) Practical Demonstration Test

Your DQC will be valid for five years, and during that time, to renew the card, you need to complete 35 hours of periodic training.
C+E Training
If you already hold a CAT C licence and want to advance to C+E (artic), then Hamilton offers very competitive rates for tailored courses throughout the year.
Category C – Rigid HGV Training
Who it’s for
Category C is ideal for anyone looking to drive rigid HGVs professionally. It’s the natural starting point for a career in the transport and logistics industry and is suitable for drivers who already hold a full Category B (car) licence.

Entry requirements
To start Category C training, you will need:

A full UK Category B (car) licence

A valid D4 medical examination

Passed Theory Test (Module 1a)

Passed Hazard Perception Test (Module 1b)
If you are training for professional driving, you will also need Driver CPC Modules 2 and 4. We can arrange all tests and medicals for you if required.
How long does it take
Training is delivered in 4-hour sessions. Most learners complete the full course within 16–20 hours, depending on experience and progress.

Category C Vehicles over 3,500kg + a trailer up to 750kg.This is the entry level HGV licence and the most popular.
Normally a 4 Day Training Course
Category C1 - Vehicles 3,500kg - 7,500kg
If you passed your car test prior to January 1997, you will have this entitlement already by rights.
Normally a 4 Day Training Course
Category C1+E - As Cat C but with a trailer over 750kg
The Category C1+E course is for those who have already got a Category C1 licence and who want to tow a larger trailer.
